We've all got those games that trigger memories, games that just about define a genera for us, and gamer friends who helped us to enjoy and create those experiences with. The game that pretty much launched my RTS obsession in my youth, was Starcraft. Warcraft II and Command & Conquer were great fun, But nothing compared to Starcraft, and its competitive nature. I got quite good, but it was unfortunately it was a solo journey. I competed on battle.net, a lot.
Years later two friends and I picked up Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds and went on to get fairly "into" the experience. It was determined that my RTS experience put me at a bit of an advantage... the learning curve was a bit less steep for me. so we often played two vs. one.
Ken (one of those friends you keep experiencing games with), and Kris (one of the same), I would classify as Turtle RPS player's, where I, at that time, was still in a rush to "out-rush" what i assumed was the inevitable mass zurgling attack, early game.
One tactic, that i often found very successful in SW:GB, was a turret rush. Walls ... pfft. who needs walls. My problem, and it was always a problem with these two, is i forgot who i was playing. Slow down, let the turtles build their silly walls, and give them time... Nahhhhh.
It was an accident, i swear to god!
In my insane attempts to control the map, i began to spread out a few low level troops, and workers... and instead of rushing their base, id build a few turrets around resources, and then move on. Somehow, again purely by accident i slipped past his builder, who was building walls, build up my turrets... and low and behold, he locked me in.
We were all on skype having a grand ol' time, and i couldn't help but chuckle when i realized what had just happened moments before Ken, when my newly built turret started shooting at his workers.
"Kris!!" ken shouts. "He's building turrets in my base!!"
It went on for a while, as i let my troops and one worker, now trapped in his base walls just sit there, occasionally killing a unit or two as he accidentally lets them approach.
I don't have a clue how the game ended. he my have just disconnected then and there, or Kris may have marched some troops in and destroyed what i had at that location, while i concentrated elsewhere... i'm not sure... But what i do remember to this day ...
"He's building turrets in my base!!!"
